The Beginnings of DIA:
The Birth of DIA in 1961

The Defense Attache Office in Saigon established its compound in the old Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Headquarters on Tan Son Nhut Airbase after the Paris Peace Accords were signed in 1973.

DIA in the 1970s:
Impacting National Security in the 1970s

DIA broke ground on the DIAC in April 1981. By 1982, it was well on its way to completion.

In 1986, Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger awarded DIA its first Joint Meritorious Unit citation for its support to counterterrorism operations from June 1985 to June 1986.

The terrorist bombing of Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia initiated a transformation in DIA’s counterterrorism efforts.
