Counterintelligence (CI) Career Field Officers perform a wide variety of functions in support of the mission to include detecting, identifying, assessing, exploiting, countering, and/or neutralizing the intelligence collection efforts/intelligence activities, sabotage, terrorist activities, and/or assassination efforts of foreign powers, organizations, or persons directed against the Department of Defense and the US Government, its personnel, information, material, facilities and/or activities. They also participate in activities that conceal true identity and achieve sensitive DoD objectives while conducting authorized and lawful activities as members of the following specialties:
- Counterintelligence (CI) Agent: Officers in this specialty leverage core CI functions to execute and conduct activities to identify, deceive, exploit, disrupt, or protect against espionage, other intelligence activities, sabotage, or assassinations conducted for or on behalf of foreign powers, organizations, or persons, or their agents, or international terrorist organizations or activities. CI Agent roles include Embedded Agent, Referent, Case Officer, Collection, Credibility Assessment, Technical Surveillance Countermeasures, and Investigator.
- Cover Support (CS): Cover Support Officers (CSOs) are specially trained individuals who provide all aspects of cover activities in order to support and enable authorized and lawful operations. The CS Career Specialty consists of officers with varying skillsets within the CI Career Specialty who support agency missions by leveraging one or more of the disciplines of cover support. The roles for CSOs generally require highly specialized skills, abilities, and training.
