THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT PROGRAM
Enacted in 1966, and taking effect on July 5, 1967, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) was created to provide the public a means to request and obtain federal government records, while still allowing sensitive information to be protected from public release. The government must make available to any requester its records unless specifically exempted or excluded in accordance with Title 5 U.S.C. 552, Freedom of Information Act.
In 1996, the FOIA was amended, requiring agencies to establish Electronic Reading Rooms. The Electronic Reading Room contains documents specifically identified for inclusion by the FOIA, as well as documents for which we have received multiple FOIA requests.
If you want to submit a FOIA request, please send a written request by mail, fax or email. Describe the records you want as specifically as possible and state the amount of fees that you are willing to pay.
On December 14, 2005, President George W. Bush signed Executive Order 13392, Improving Agency Disclosure of Information. In accordance with the Executive Order, agencies were required to establish FOIA Requester Service Centers and identify FOIA Chief Public Liaisons.
