Acting DIA Director David Shedd participated in two panels at the inaugural Intelligence and National Security Summit, co-sponsored by the Intelligence and National Security Alliance (INSA) and the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) International Sept. 18.
Shedd joined CIA Director John Brennan, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Director Letitia Long, and National Security Agency Director Adm. Michael Rogers for the panel “What should the nation expect from its intelligence community?” A transcript of this session can be found here.
“When we raise our right hand to protect the Constitution, we do so with heart, soul and mind. And the men and women of this [intelligence] community do so all alike. When I think of the risks that our men and women are oftentimes placed in, often with imperfect information, to make decisions day in and day out, they do their level best to do so on behalf of the American people, because that’s who they’re sworn to protect,” Shedd said on the topic of trust and duty.
Shedd also participated in a panel that discussed 10 years of intelligence reform and how the intelligence community has changed since the passage of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act (IRTPA) in 2004.
Other DIA leaders spoke to attendees about cyber security and indication and warning as it relates to the Asia-Pacific region. DIA Director for Analysis Catherine Johnston participated in the panel “Asia-Pacific Imperatives and Effective National Assessment,” and Ron Carback, the defense intelligence officer for cyber, was on the panel for “Cyber Threat and the Role of Intelligence.”
