A tribute to DIA’s 18th director

By DIA Public Affairs

Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn will retire as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and from a 33-year Army career Aug. 7. At the helm of the agency, he focused his time on transforming DIA into a more agile, responsive and efficient enterprise and building a culture of integration, teamwork and innovation.

“His hallmark achievement has been the transformation of defense intelligence into an agile and responsive enterprise in support of U.S. combatant commanders and warfighters,” said Sen. Jack Reed in a statement to Congress.

During Flynn’s tenure, he instituted a new organizational structure for the agency, further fusing analysis and collection. The director worked to strengthen collaboration with the combatant commands, intelligence community colleagues and foreign partners, while also focusing on the development of the workforce. Another key priority for Flynn was infusing innovation into everything the agency does. The newly created Innovation Office and launch of NeedipeDIA and the Open Innovation Gateway are increasing transparency and improving business processes at all levels of DIA.

Through all these efforts, Flynn ensured the agency never lost sight of its core values: teamwork, excellence, integrity and service in defense of the nation.
