The DIA enlisted workforce closed out the year reflecting on 2017 and preparing for 2018 during an off-site event Dec. 18, at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland.
Led by the DIA command senior enlisted leader Master Gunnery Sgt. Scott H. Stalker, the off-site focused on total force fitness and nutrition, agency strategy, and included an open discussion with DIA Director Lt. Gen. Robert Ashley. The command senior enlisted leaders for Cyber Command and the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency also addressed the group.
“What I wanted to gain out of this predominately is for us to understand where we are today, but then let’s focus on 2018,” said Stalker. “It’s about how do we personally get better, how do we develop ourselves, and then how do we contribute to the agency collectively.”
Stalker added that the off-site was not just about the leaders in the room. He expects them to take the information and further develop their teammates whether they are enlisted members, military officers or civilians.
In an open discussion, Stalker touched on setting personal and professional priorities, and planning for the future. He encouraged the group to commit themselves to developing others and ensure they avoid “outsourcing their leadership.”
Matt Williams, the DIA deputy chief of Strategic Planning, Policy and Performance, along with DIA Strategist Army Lt. Col. Brian Scicluna, outlined the current DIA strategy and the responsibility of military leaders in that strategy.
“I look to you for technical expertise and to set the standard,” said Williams to the group of leaders.
Air Force Reserve Senior Master Sgt. Jean Todd, senior enlisted advisor for the DIA Joint Reserve Intelligence Support Element, said she enjoyed the off-site and hearing firsthand what senior leaders expect from the enlisted workforce.
With this insight, Todd said, “I’ll be able to develop myself and adjust my goals to better lead my reservists to follow the DIA mission.”
