The U.S. Senate recently confirmed the nomination of Lt. Gen. Robert P. Ashley, Jr., U.S. Army, to become the 21st Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) August 3. “Lt. Gen. Ashley brings with him a wealth of experience in intelligence, both as a producer and consumer,” said Lt. Gen. Vincent Stewart, USMC, the current DIA Director.
“He is well suited to lead this talented organization, having previously served as the Director of Intelligence of both Central Command and the Joint Special Operations Command, and as the Commanding General of the U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence and Fort Huachuca,” Stewart added.
Ashley currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-2, U.S. Army.
The transition between Stewart and Ashley is expected to take place in October.
“Serving as your Director has been the absolute pinnacle of my career, and it has been an honor and privilege to serve beside you,” Stewart told DIA employees. “You make me proud, each and every day.”
Stewart is to become the Deputy Commander of U.S. Cyber Command. The Senate confirmed his nomination for that position July 31.
DIA’s mission is to provide intelligence on foreign militaries and operating environments that delivers decision advantage to prevent and decisively win wars. Nearly 50% of DIA’s 16,500 employees are stationed outside Washington, DC at national intelligence centers, combatant commands, combat zones, and defense attaché offices worldwide in more than 140 countries.
