Retirement Ceremony

This Army life began for LTG Scott Berrier in 1984 when he was commissioned as a Military Intelligence officer through ROTC at the University of Wisconsin — Stevens Point. He served as a lieutenant at Fort Richardson, Alaska, with the 172d Infantry Brigade. This is where Berrier met and married the former JoAnn Bassett and commenced what would be a 37-year Army journey. After the MI Officer’s Advanced Course, Berrier was assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment and participated in the 1990 invasion of Panama (Operation JUST CAUSE).

After company command at Fort Ord, California, Team Berrier returned to Alaska to serve as a company commander and brigade S-2 with the 6th Infantry Division (Light). After attending Command and General Staff College, the family traveled to Fort Hood, Texas (now Fort Cavazos) for duty as a battalion, later brigade, S3 in the 504th Military Intelligence Brigade. Next came joint assignments at USCENTCOM J2 as the Chief of the Battle Damage Assessment Branch, later as the SOCCENT J2, where Berrier deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom after 9/11. Team Berrier next transitioned to Fort Drum, New York, for battalion command with the 10th Mountain Division, deploying to Afghanistan with CJTF-180. After a move to Hawaii for duty as the 25th Infantry Division’s G2, Berrier deployed back to Afghanistan for service with CJTF-76.

After the Army War College and brigade command in the Republic of Korea, Team Berrier returned to Fort Hood for service as III Corps G2 and deployment to Iraq with MNF-I Headquarters. Stints as USFK J2 and USCENTCOM J2 followed before another deployment to Afghanistan, this time as J2 with the Resolute Support headquarters in 2014.

After his last Afghan deployment, Berrier assumed command of the Intelligence Center of Excellence and Fort Huachuca, Arizona, where Annie served in the cavalry as a Trooper with B Troop, 4th U.S. Cavalry Regiment. Team Berrier then shifted to Washington D.C. for his first Pentagon assignment, as the 46th Army G2.

In his last assignment, Berrier served as the 22nd director of the Defense Intelligence Agency from October 2020 to February 2024. During his tenure, the Agency made sweeping organizational changes to posture for strategic competition. DIA’s operating model shifted to be more responsive, and the Agency is currently supporting multiple crises on a global scale.

Berrier earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Wisconsin — Stevens Point, a master’s degree in general studies from Central Michigan University, and a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College. Scott and Annie have two sons; Cole and Connor, two daughters-in-law; Mika and Amanda, and two grandchildren; Jack and Maeve. Team Berrier will retire in the National Capital Region.
