Letter from Samuel Culper to Lt. Caleb Brewster
This undated document, the sixth in a series of 18 to be displayed, is a note given to Lt.
Caleb Brewster by Abraham Woodhall instructing him to deliver his letter, dated July 20,
1780, containing intelligence on the movement of British forces. The letter was delivered
to Maj. Benjamin Talmadge who forwarded it to Maj. Gen. Robert Howe, commandant of
the fortifications at Fort West Point. Howe then sent the letter to Gen. Washington.
Sir,
The inclosed requires your immediate departure this day by all means let not an
hour

Culper’s letter, the fifth letter exhibited in this series, contained the detailed information
about the British ships of the line and the number of troops under the command of
Admiral Thomas Graves preparing to depart from New York.
